Jemez Mountains

The Gilman Tunnels, reached by using State Road 485, have been featured in several movies--the most recent that comes to mind is "3:10 to Yuma" starring Russell Crowe.  The Guadalupe River flows through the canyon.

The two tunnels were originally blasted out during the 1920s for a logging railroad.

The state road passes through the tunnels and turns into a forest road.

Valles Caldera National Preserve is a 13 1/2 mile in diameter volcanic crater in the Jemez Mountains.  Volcanic domes, fumaroles, hot springs and streams can be found on the caldera floor.  These photos were taken in August, 2011.  The entire region has been devastated by forest fires during the past few years.

The highest point of the caldera is Redondo Peak at 11, 253 feet.  The hill seen in the caldera (in this photo) is Cerro la Jara, a 246 foot high  ryholite lava dome.
